That is a category error: conquest and political violence are common in history, but the doctrines, timelines, and what continued after the mid-20th century are not the same. ## Islamic expansion was conquest, not a late aberration From the 630s, Arab armies under the early caliphates took the Levant, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, the Maghreb, and most of Iberia within about a century. Later waves added Sicily, Anatolia, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and large parts of the Indian subcontinent under Turkic and Mughal rulers. The Ottoman Empire still held Southeast Europe into the 19th and early 20th centuries. This was not trade-post imperialism that arrived after 1492. It was religiously framed expansion.
